Overview

The 154th Ohio Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was an infantry regiment from Ohio that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Organized at Camp Dennison in May 1864, the regiment was composed primarily of men from the 23rd Battalion, Ohio National Guard (Madison County), and the 60th Regiment, Ohio National Guard (Greene County). The unit was mustered in for a term of 100 days and served primarily in West Virginia, performing guard and escort duties in support of Union operations.

Organization & Service

The 154th Ohio Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was organized at Camp Dennison and mustered into service on May 9, 1864. Colonel Robert Stevenson commanded the regiment, with Lieutenant Colonel Joseph E. Wilson and Major William A. Neil as principal officers. The regiment departed Ohio on May 12, traveling via Columbus and Bellaire to New Creek, West Virginia, where it arrived on May 14.

Upon arrival, the regiment was assigned to guard, picket, and escort duties. Company F was detached to Piedmont on May 22, remaining there until the regiment’s return to Ohio. On May 29, one company was sent to the Youghiogheny bridge, while the remaining companies moved to Greenland Gap. On June 4, a detachment engaged in a skirmish with McNeil’s Confederate battalion near Moorfield. From June 12 to July 4, various detachments participated in scouting expeditions. The regiment returned to New Creek on July 25. On August 4, Confederate forces attacked the Union positions at New Creek, involving the 154th in the defense. The regiment began its return to Ohio on August 22 and was mustered out of service on September 1, 1864.
