The unit was composed of men from the 21st Battalion, Ohio National Guard (Delaware County), and the 13th Battalion, Ohio National Guard (Erie County). Its primary role was to provide garrison and fatigue duty in the defenses of Washington, D.C.

This regiment served exclusively in the Eastern Theater, contributing to the security of the nation’s capital during a critical period of the war.

Organization & Service

The 145th Ohio Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, and mustered into service on May 12, 1864. Shortly after organization, the regiment was ordered to Washington, D.C., where it was assigned to the command of General Christopher C. Augur. The regiment was stationed at Forts Whipple, Woodbury, Tillinghast, and Albany, all part of the southern defenses of Washington on Arlington Heights.

The primary duties of the regiment consisted of garrison and fatigue work, helping to maintain the fortifications and ensure the security of the capital during the summer of 1864. The regiment did not participate in any major field engagements. On August 20, 1864, with its term of service expired, the regiment was transported by rail to Baltimore and then via the Northern Central and Pennsylvania Central railroads back to Camp Chase, Ohio. The 145th Ohio Infantry was mustered out of service at Camp Chase on August 24, 1864.
