Overview

The 139th Ohio Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for Union service during the American Civil War. Mustered in at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio, between May 13 and May 21, 1864, the regiment served a short-term enlistment of 100 days. It was primarily composed of men from the 9th Regiment, Ohio National Guard (Cincinnati), with additional companies from the 82nd Battalion (Van Wert County) and the 71st Battalion (Ottawa County). The regiment served in the Eastern Theater, performing guard duty in Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Organization & Service

The 139th Ohio Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, from May 13 to May 21, 1864. The regiment consisted of nine companies, mainly drawn from the Ohio National Guard. Shortly after organization, the unit traveled via the Central Ohio and Baltimore & Ohio railroads to Washington, D.C., where it was stationed in barracks.

On June 1, 1864, the regiment was assigned to duty at Point Lookout, Maryland. Its primary responsibility was guarding Confederate prisoners of war at the large prison camp located there. The 139th remained at Point Lookout until August 22, 1864, when it was ordered to Baltimore, Maryland. From Baltimore, the regiment returned to Camp Chase, Ohio, and was mustered out of service on August 26, 1864, upon the expiration of its 100-day term.
