Organization & Service
The 105th Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was organized at Camp Cleveland, Ohio, and mustered into Federal service on August 20 and 21, 1862. The regiment, numbering 1,013 men at muster, departed Ohio within hours of organization under orders for immediate field service. Its initial operations were in Kentucky, where it endured difficult marches and participated in the campaign leading to the Battle of Perryville in October 1862. At Perryville, the regiment suffered significant casualties.
Following Perryville, the 105th moved into Tennessee, remaining at Murfreesboro until June 1863. The regiment then participated in the Tullahoma Campaign, followed by engagement at the Battle of Chickamauga, where it again sustained heavy losses. The 105th was present during the Chattanooga operations and fought at Missionary Ridge. In 1864, the regiment took part in the Atlanta Campaign, participating in numerous skirmishes and battles, and continued with Sherman’s March to the Sea and the Carolinas Campaign. The regiment marched to Washington, D.C., after the war’s conclusion and was mustered out on June 3, 1865. Of the original 1,013 men, only 427 were present at the final roll call.
