The 92nd Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was an infantry regiment from Ohio that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Organized at Camp Marietta and Gallipolis between September 7 and 17, 1862, the regiment was mustered in for three years’ service with a total strength of 949 officers and men. The unit served primarily in the Western Theater and participated in several major campaigns and battles, including Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and the Atlanta Campaign.
Organization & Service
The 92nd Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service) was organized at Camp Marietta and Gallipolis, Ohio, in September 1862. Upon completion of organization, the regiment was ordered to Point Pleasant, Virginia. In January 1863, it was transferred to Tennessee, where it took part in the battle of Hoover’s Gap in June, suffering minimal casualties. The regiment was involved in the Tullahoma Campaign and advanced to Elk River, engaging in several skirmishes near Lane’s Chapel in September 1863.
At the Battle of Chickamauga, the 92nd Ohio played a significant role as part of the rear-guard, with its actions detailed in the report of Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Putnam, Jr. The regiment was commended for its discipline and effectiveness under fire, particularly during a charge on September 20, 1863, which resulted in the capture of prisoners and enemy artillery. Following Chickamauga, the regiment assisted in the capture of Brown’s Ferry and garrisoned the position until relieved by Hooker’s Corps. It then returned to Chattanooga and participated in the assault on Missionary Ridge, where it suffered heavy losses but contributed to the capture of enemy guns and prisoners.
In 1864, the regiment was engaged at Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Dallas, Pine Mountain, and Kennesaw Mountain, sustaining casualties in several of these actions. It was present at the siege of Atlanta, the battle at Utoy Creek, and the charge at Jonesboro. After the fall of Atlanta, the 92nd Ohio joined Sherman’s March to the Sea and continued into the Carolinas, fighting at Averasboro and Bentonville. The regiment was mustered out of service on June 14, 1865.
