11th New York Artillery Heavy in the American Civil War

Overview

The 11th New York Artillery (Heavy) was a Union regiment authorized for service during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized in New York State, with recruiting headquarters established at Rochester. Intended as a heavy artillery unit, its formation began in early 1863, but the regiment was never fully completed. The 11th New York Artillery (Heavy) served on the Union side and was associated with the Eastern Theater. Its brief existence is notable for the incomplete organization and subsequent transfer of its companies and recruits to other New York artillery regiments.

Organization & Service

Authority to recruit the 11th New York Artillery (Heavy) was granted to Major William B. Barnes on February 7, 1863. Recruitment efforts were centered in Rochester, New York. By July 25, 1863, only four companies had been organized. On that date, the authority to complete the regiment was revoked. The four organized companies were transferred to the 4th New York Artillery. Additionally, recruits who had not yet been assigned to companies were transferred to the 13th New York Artillery. The 11th New York Artillery (Heavy) did not serve as a complete regiment in the field and was not engaged in independent operations.
