Overview
The 194th New York Infantry (Union Army, Infantry) was the final regiment of infantry organized by the State of New York during the Civil War. It was mustered into United States service in the spring of 1865, with its companies primarily recruited from the counties of Chemung, Yates, Allegany, Seneca, Ontario, Onondaga, Cattaraugus, and Niagara. The regiment was organized at Elmira, New York, and served in the Union Army. Its period of service coincided with the closing weeks of the war, and it did not leave the state before being mustered out.
Organization & Service
The 194th New York Infantry was organized at Elmira, New York, in March and April 1865. Companies A, B, C, D, E, and F were mustered into service between March 29 and April 27, 1865, for terms of one and three years. Company G was mustered in at Hart’s Island on April 27, 1865. Company I was not mustered in as a company, and Company K was not organized. The regiment was composed in part of independent companies that were in the process of organization at the time. The unit did not leave New York State and saw no active field service. The companies were mustered out at their respective locations—Elmira and Hart’s Island—on May 3 and May 10, 1865.
The 194th New York Infantry was not attached to any field brigade, division, or corps, and did not participate in any campaigns or battles. Its service was limited to organization and mustering duties within New York State during the final weeks of the Civil War.
