192nd New York Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 192nd New York Infantry (Union Army, Infantry) was organized during the final year of the Civil War, drawing recruits from the counties of Albany, Rensselaer, Clinton, Schenectady, Oneida, and Ulster. The regiment was mustered into United States service at Albany, New York, between March 13 and April 8, 1865, for terms of one, two, and three years. It served on the Union side, primarily in the Shenandoah Valley theater. Notably, Colonel Nathan G. Axtell, previously known as the “fighting chaplain” of the 30th New York, commanded the regiment.

The 192nd New York Infantry entered service as the war was drawing to a close and did not participate in any major engagements before its mustering out.

Organization & Service

The 192nd New York Infantry was organized at Albany, New York, with mustering taking place from March 13 to April 8, 1865. Recruitment was conducted in several upstate counties. The regiment left New York in detachments during March and April 1865 and was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, Army of the Shenandoah.

Due to the timing of its organization, the regiment arrived in the field after the principal hostilities had ceased. It did not see combat and was primarily engaged in post-war duties in the Shenandoah Valley. The regiment was mustered out and discharged under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Barent Van Buren on August 28, 1865, at Cumberland, Maryland.
