Overview
The 184th New York Infantry (One Year’s Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Oswego County, New York, during the final year of the Civil War. Mustered into United States service at Elmira between September 12 and 16, 1864, the regiment served in the Union Army, primarily in the Shenandoah Valley and the Department of Virginia. Its service was marked by participation in the latter stages of the war, including the Battle of Cedar Creek and duty at Bermuda Hundred and Harrison’s Landing.
Organization & Service
The 184th New York Infantry was recruited in Oswego County, with companies assembling at Oswego before mustering in at Elmira from September 12 to 16, 1864, for a one-year term. Upon organization, Companies A, B, D, and F, under Major William D. Ferguson, departed New York on September 12, 1864, joining the Army of the Shenandoah as part of the 1st Brigade, Ricketts’ Division, VI Corps. These companies participated in Sheridan’s campaign in the Shenandoah Valley, notably engaging at the Battle of Cedar Creek.
The remaining companies, under Colonel Wardwell G. Robinson, left the state on September 16, 1864, and were stationed at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia. In December 1864, the regiment was assigned to a separate brigade in the Army of the James and posted at Harrison’s Landing, except for Company I, which was stationed at Fort Pocahontas. The regiment continued its service in Virginia until the end of the war. On June 27, 1865, those enlisted men whose terms had not expired were transferred to the 96th New York Infantry. The 184th New York Infantry was mustered out under Colonel Robinson at City Point, Virginia, on June 29, 1865.
