Overview
The 180th New York Infantry (Infantry) was an infantry regiment authorized for service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized in New York State, but it failed to complete its organization and never served as a distinct unit in the field. The men who had enlisted for the 180th New York Infantry were ultimately transferred to another regiment before the 180th was mustered into service.
This unit is distinct from other New York infantry regiments, including the 179th New York Infantry.
Organization & Service
The 180th New York Infantry began organizing under the command of Colonel Lewis T. Barney. However, the regiment did not complete its organization and was never formally mustered into United States service as a separate entity. On February 21, 1865, the enlisted men who had joined the 180th were transferred to the 179th New York Infantry, where they became Company G of that regiment. No further independent service or field operations are recorded for the 180th New York Infantry.
