The 7th New York Veteran Infantry (Union) was a veteran infantry regiment organized in New York State for service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was reconstituted under the authority of Colonel George W. Von Schack, beginning May 6, 1863, and was mustered into United States service in the early spring of 1864. It served in the Eastern Theater, primarily with the Army of the Potomac, and was composed of veterans and recruits from earlier service.
This unit is distinct from the original 7th New York Infantry (Three Years’ Service).
Organization & Service
Colonel George W. Von Schack was authorized on May 6, 1863, to reorganize the 7th New York Infantry as a veteran regiment. The regiment was mustered into service in early 1864. Prior to the completion of its regimental organization, several companies served temporarily with the 52nd New York Infantry. Once fully organized, the 7th New York Veteran Infantry was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac.
The regiment joined the Army of the Potomac in time for the Overland Campaign, participating in the Wilderness campaign and subsequent operations leading to the Siege of Petersburg. Throughout the siege, the regiment was engaged in numerous actions, including the assaults on Petersburg in June 1864, the battles at the Weldon Railroad, Deep Bottom, Strawberry Plains, Reams’ Station, Hatcher’s Run, Fort Stedman, White Oak Road, and the final assault on Petersburg. The regiment also took part in the closing battles of the Appomattox Campaign. The 7th New York Veteran Infantry was mustered out of service at Hart’s Island, New York, on August 4, 1865.
