Overview

Organization & Service
The 167th Pennsylvania Infantry (Nine Months’ Service) was organized at Reading, Pennsylvania, from November 10 to December 6, 1862. The regiment was composed mainly of men from Bucks County. Upon completion of organization, the unit entered United States service for a nine-month enlistment.
In December 1862, the regiment was ordered to Suffolk, Virginia, where it joined the forces under General John J. Peck. On January 30, 1863, the 167th Pennsylvania was closely engaged at the Battle of Deserted House, during which Colonel Charles A. Knoderer was mortally wounded. Subsequently, the regiment participated in the defense of Suffolk during the Confederate siege led by General James Longstreet in April and May 1863. After the lifting of the siege, the regiment joined movements toward Richmond and, in July, was attached to the Army of the Potomac as part of the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 1st Corps. The 167th Pennsylvania took part in the pursuit of General Robert E. Lee’s army following the Battle of Gettysburg. The regiment was mustered out of service at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on August 12, 1863.
