Overview

The 22nd Pennsylvania Infantry (Three Months’ Service), also known as the Philadelphia Light Guard, was an infantry regiment organized in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for Union service during the early months of the American Civil War. Mustered in on April 23, 1861, the regiment served a three-month term, primarily performing guard and police duties in Baltimore, Maryland. The unit was composed largely of Philadelphia militia and was among the first Pennsylvania regiments to respond to the call for troops in 1861.

Organization & Service

The 22nd Pennsylvania Infantry (Three Months’ Service) was organized at Philadelphia and mustered into United States service on April 23, 1861. The regiment, under the command of Colonel Turner G. Morehead, was quickly mobilized following President Lincoln’s call for volunteers. In May 1861, the regiment was ordered to Baltimore, Maryland, where it was stationed at Locust Point. Subsequently, the unit encamped at Patterson’s Park and Mount Clare, remaining in the Baltimore area for the duration of its service.

Throughout its term, the 22nd Pennsylvania Infantry was attached to various commands responsible for the defense and security of Baltimore. The regiment’s primary duties included guard and police work, helping to maintain order in a city with divided loyalties at the outset of the war. The regiment did not participate in any major battles or campaigns during its service.
