25th Indiana Light Battery in the American Civil War

Overview

The 25th Indiana Light Battery (One Year Service) served as an artillery unit for the Union Army during the American Civil War. Organized in Indiana in September and October 1864, it was the last artillery company raised by the state. The battery was mustered in for one year of service and played a role in the Western Theater, notably participating in the Battle of Nashville and subsequent operations in Alabama.

Organization & Service

The 25th Indiana Light Battery was recruited during September and October 1864 and officially mustered into service on November 28, 1864. Under the command of Captain Frederick C. Sturm, the battery departed Indiana for Nashville, Tennessee, where it reported for duty to General Thomas J. Wood of the 4th Army Corps on December 13, 1864.

Just two days after arriving, the battery was engaged in the Battle of Nashville (December 15–16, 1864). Following the Union victory, the 25th Indiana Light Battery joined in the pursuit of Confederate General Hood’s army as far as Huntsville, Alabama. The unit remained stationed at Huntsville until February 1865, after which it moved to Decatur, Alabama, for garrison duty. The battery continued this service until July 11, 1865, when it was ordered back to Indiana. It arrived in Indianapolis on July 13 with 4 officers and 125 men and was mustered out on July 20, 1865.
