Field & Staff

  • Captain Samuel J. Harris – Original commander; resigned during service.
  • Captain George R. Swallow – Promoted from lieutenant; later promoted to major of the 10th Indiana Cavalry.

Consolidations or Transfers

On March 13, 1865, the 8th Indiana Battery was consolidated with the 7th Indiana Light Battery. Lieutenant William Stokes of the 8th was commissioned captain of the combined organization. On April 5, 1865, twenty-four veterans from the 5th Indiana Battery were added to the battery’s numbers. At muster-out in July 1865, the battery included men from the 5th, 7th, and 8th Indiana Batteries.
