Overview
The 155th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Indiana for Union service during the final months of the American Civil War. The regiment was formed in response to a call for one-year regiments issued in December 1864. It was organized at Indianapolis in April 1865 and mustered into Federal service on April 18, 1865. The 155th Indiana served primarily in the Eastern Theater, performing post and garrison duties in Virginia, Delaware, and Maryland.
This regiment is distinct from Indiana infantry regiments of other service terms.
Organization & Service
The 155th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was composed of companies recruited from Indiana’s 9th, 10th, and 11th districts. The regiment was organized at Indianapolis and mustered in on April 18, 1865, under the command of Colonel John M. Wilson, Lieutenant Colonel John D. McKahin, and Major John C. Scantling. The regiment departed Indiana on April 26, 1865, and proceeded to Washington, D.C.
Upon arrival, the 155th Indiana was sent to Alexandria, Virginia, where it was assigned to the Provisional Brigade, 3rd Division, 9th Army Corps. On May 3, 1865, the regiment was transferred to Dover, Delaware. While stationed at Dover, companies were detached for duty at Centerville and Wilmington, Delaware, as well as Salisbury, Maryland. The regiment was later consolidated at Dover and mustered out of service on August 4, 1865.
