Organization & Service
The 153rd Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana, in February 1865, drawing its ranks largely from the 11th Congressional District. The regiment was officially mustered into Federal service on March 1, 1865, under the command of Colonel Oliver H. P. Carey, Lieutenant Colonel Charles S. Ellis, and Major James F. Wildman. On March 5, 1865, the regiment departed Indiana for Louisville, Kentucky.
Upon arrival in Louisville, the regiment was ordered to Russellville, Kentucky, with detachments sent to Bowling Green, Hopkinsville, and other points in the region. While stationed in Kentucky, Companies D, G, and H were involved in several skirmishes with guerrilla forces. The regiment remained in this area until June 16, 1865, when it returned to Louisville. There, it was assigned to duty at Taylor Barracks, performing garrison and provost duties until mustered out of service on September 4, 1865.
