Overview
The 146th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was an infantry regiment raised by the State of Indiana for Federal service during the final months of the American Civil War. Organized at Indianapolis in February 1865, the regiment served the Union in the Eastern Theater, primarily performing garrison and guard duties in Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. The regiment was part of Indiana’s response to a late-war call for one-year regiments and was among the last infantry units raised by the state.
Organization & Service
The 146th Indiana Infantry (One Year’s Service) was recruited from the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Congressional districts of Indiana. Organization took place at Indianapolis in February 1865, and the regiment was mustered into Federal service on March 9, 1865, with a total strength of 979 men. On March 11, the regiment departed Indiana for Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, where it was assigned to a provisional division of the Army of the Shenandoah.
Throughout its service, the regiment was engaged in post and guard duty at several locations, including Charlestown, Winchester, Stephenson’s Depot, Jordan’s Springs, and Summit Point, Virginia. On July 27, 1865, the unit was ordered to the Relay House and then to Baltimore, Maryland, where it was assigned to the Military District of Delaware. Companies were detached for duty at various locations: Hicks’ General Hospital in Baltimore, Havre de Grace, Dover, Wilmington (Delaware), Salisbury, and Easton (Maryland). The regiment was mustered out of service on August 31, 1865.
