132nd Indiana Infantry in the American Civil War

Overview

The 132nd Indiana Infantry (One Hundred Days’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Indiana for Union service during the American Civil War. Mustered in May 1864 at Indianapolis, the regiment was part of Indiana’s quota of one hundred days’ troops, intended to perform guard and garrison duty, thereby freeing veteran units for active campaigning. The regiment served primarily in Tennessee, supporting Union operations during the critical campaigns of 1864.

This unit is distinct from any Indiana regiments of longer service terms.

Organization & Service

The 132nd Indiana Infantry was organized at Indianapolis and mustered into United States service on May 18, 1864. Seven companies were recruited in Indianapolis, with one company each from Shelbyville, Franklin, and Danville. The regiment, totaling 948 men, departed Indiana immediately after muster and proceeded to Tennessee.

Upon arrival in Nashville, the 132nd Indiana was assigned to guard duty along key railroad lines, including the Nashville & Chattanooga, Tennessee & Alabama, and Memphis & Charleston railroads. The regiment’s primary role was to protect these vital transportation routes, ensuring the safe movement of supplies and communications for Union forces, particularly those supporting General Sherman’s operations. The regiment remained on this duty, often beyond its original term of enlistment, until late August 1864, when it was mustered out of service.
