Overview
The 122nd Indiana Infantry (Infantry) was a Union regiment authorized for service during the American Civil War from the state of Indiana. It was intended to serve as an infantry regiment and was organized in response to the call of September 14, 1863. Recruitment for this regiment took place primarily in Indiana’s 3rd Congressional district. However, the regiment was never fully organized or mustered into Federal service under this designation.
This unit is distinct from other Indiana infantry regiments with similar numerical designations.
Organization & Service
Following the call of September 14, 1863, Indiana was tasked with raising four regiments of cavalry and seven regiments of infantry. Volunteer enthusiasm led to the formation of five cavalry and six infantry regiments. The companies intended for the 122nd Indiana Infantry were recruited in the 3rd Congressional district. However, the War Department ultimately accepted the additional cavalry regiment in place of the planned infantry regiment.
The companies raised for the 122nd Indiana Infantry were consolidated with those being raised for the 120th Indiana Infantry in the 1st Congressional district. As a result, the numerical designation of the 122nd was dropped, and the regiment did not serve as a distinct unit in the field. No separate muster or service record exists for the 122nd Indiana Infantry.
