Overview
The 111th Indiana Infantry (Minute Men) was a short-term infantry regiment organized for emergency service by the State of Indiana during the American Civil War. Formed in response to the threat posed by Confederate cavalry under General John Hunt Morgan during his 1863 raid into Indiana, the regiment was organized at Indianapolis in July 1863. The unit was part of a rapid mobilization of state forces intended to defend against Morgan’s incursion but was not called into active field service.
Organization & Service
The 111th Indiana Infantry (Minute Men) was organized at Indianapolis on July 13, 1863. The regiment consisted of eleven companies, with Delaware County providing four companies, Fayette County two (including one cavalry company), and Montgomery, Rush, Miami, Monroe, and Hamilton counties each supplying one company. The total strength was approximately 733 officers and enlisted men. The regiment was mustered into state service as part of Indiana’s emergency response to Morgan’s Raid, which saw a large mobilization of local militia and minute men regiments numbered 102 through 114.
Despite being fully organized and ready for deployment, the 111th Indiana Infantry was not called into the field, as the immediate threat from Morgan’s forces subsided. The regiment was mustered out of service on July 15, 1863, only two days after its organization.
