Overview
The 98th Indiana Infantry (Infantry) was a Union regiment authorized for recruitment in Indiana during the American Civil War. It was intended to be organized in the 8th Congressional District, with Lafayette designated as the rendezvous point. The regiment was part of the infantry branch and was to serve in the Western Theater. However, the regiment was never fully organized as an independent unit.
Only two companies were successfully recruited for the 98th Indiana Infantry. These companies were subsequently assigned to the 100th Indiana Infantry, which was being organized in the 10th Congressional District. As a result, the 98th Indiana Infantry did not see service as a distinct regiment.
Organization & Service
Recruitment for the 98th Indiana Infantry began in response to the call of July 1862. Lafayette, Indiana, was selected as the rendezvous for the regiment. Despite efforts to fill the regiment’s ranks, only two companies were raised. Due to insufficient numbers, these companies were transferred to the 100th Indiana Infantry, which was then in the process of organization in the 10th Congressional District.
The 98th Indiana Infantry was never mustered into service as a complete regiment, and no further organizational activities or field service are recorded for this unit. The two companies that were raised became part of the 100th Indiana Infantry and served under that designation for the remainder of the war.
