Overview
The 10th Ohio Infantry (Three Months’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for short-term service at the outset of the American Civil War. The regiment was composed primarily of men from Cincinnati and the surrounding area, many of whom had prior military experience in European armies or the Mexican War. The unit served the Union in the Western Theater during its brief period of enlistment in 1861.
Organization & Service
The companies forming the 10th Ohio Infantry (Three Months’ Service) were enrolled between April 18 and April 24, 1861, at Camp Harrison near Cincinnati. The regiment was mustered into United States service from May 1 to May 12, 1861, for a term of three months. Shortly after organization, the regiment moved to Camp Dennison, where it underwent intensive instruction in discipline and drill. The regiment’s training was considered effective, aided by the prior military experience of many of its members.
As the initial term of enlistment neared its midpoint, orders were issued to reorganize the regiment for a longer period. On June 3, 1861, nearly the entire regiment volunteered for three years’ service, forming the nucleus of the 10th Ohio Infantry (Three Years’ Service). Those members who did not reenlist for the extended term were mustered out at the expiration of their original enlistment, from August 20 to August 23, 1861.
