Overview
The 7th Ohio Infantry (Three Months’ Service) was an infantry regiment organized in Ohio for service in the Union Army at the outset of the American Civil War. The regiment was composed of companies recruited from Cleveland, Oberlin, Warren, Painesville, Youngstown, Norwalk, and Franklin, with all companies assembling at Camp Taylor near Cleveland. The unit was mustered into United States service between April 22 and April 30, 1861, for a term of three months.
The regiment was part of the initial response to President Lincoln’s call for volunteers following the outbreak of hostilities. Its members were primarily from northern Ohio and represented some of the earliest organized Union forces from the state.
Organization & Service
The 7th Ohio Infantry (Three Months’ Service) was organized at Camp Taylor, near Cleveland, with companies enrolling from April 18 to April 25, 1861. The regiment was officially mustered into federal service between April 22 and April 30, 1861. Shortly after organization, the regiment was ordered to Camp Dennison, where officers began drilling and disciplining the men in preparation for active service.
During its three months’ term, the regiment primarily performed duties related to organization and training. When President Lincoln issued a second call for 300,000 men to serve for three years, nearly all members of the regiment volunteered to reenlist for the longer term. The reenrollment for three years’ service took place on June 19 and 20, 1861. Those who did not reenlist were mustered out with their companies between August 18 and August 22, 1861.
