Regimental History
One Hundred and Seventy-ninth Infantry. — Col., William H. Blair; Lieut.-Col., Daniel M. Yost; Maj., William H. Yerkes. This militia regiment was recruited in the autumn of 1862 in the counties of Berks, Lancaster, Montgomery, Pike and Wayne and Philadelphia city and mustered into the U. S. service early in December at Philadelphia for a nine months term. Co. E was ordered to Chestnut Hill hospital at Philadelphia, where it remained during its entire term of service, with the exception of a detail for the custody of prisoners at West Chester after the battle of Gettysburg. The remainder of the regiment was stationed at Yorktown during the winter of 1862-63 and in July, 1863, joined in the movement toward Richmond, engaging twice in skirmishes with the enemy. The regiment proffered its services for the defense of its native state at the expiration of its term of service, but the need having passed with the battle of Gettysburg, the command was mustered out at Harrisburg on July 27, 1863.
