Regimental History
One Hundred and Seventy-fourth Infantry. — Col., John Nyce; Lieut.-Col., Edward T. Hess; Majs., Joseph B. Roberts, J. Mathias Beans. This regiment of militia was composed of eight companies from Bucks county and two from Northampton. It was mustered into the U. S. service at Philadelphia, in Oct. and Nov., 1862, for nine months, and left for Washington late in November. It was then ordered to Suffolk; assigned to the brigade under Gen. Ferry; was a part of the force sent to New Berne, N. C, late in December; was thence sent to Charleston; arrived at Hilton Head on Feb. 5, 1863; encamped on Helena island until Feb. 27, and then proceeded to Beaufort, where it remained until June. The remainder of its term of service was spent at Hilton Head and on Aug. 7, 1863, it was mustered out at Philadelphia.
