Regimental History
One Hundred and Fifty-seventh Infantry. — Lieut. -Col., Edmund T. Tiers; Majs., Thomas H. Addicks, Edmund T. Tiers, Thomas E. Carter. This regiment was never fully organized. Recruiting commenced in the fall of 1862, and in December, when its ranks were only partially filled, it was sent to garrison Fort Delaware. Meanwhile, an effort had been made to recruit the 156th regiment, but with little success, and on Feb 27, 1863, the 156th and 157th were consolidated and formed into a battalion of four companies. It was stationed in the defences of Washington until the end of May, 1864, when it joined the Army of the Potomac at Cold Harbor and participated in the operations there and at Bethesda Church as part of the 2nd brigade, 4th division, 5th corps, losing 1 killed, 16 wounded and 2 missing. It was again active at Petersburg, Weldon railroad, Chapel house and Hatcher's run. The battalion was transferred to the 191st Pa. on March 21, 1865, and its subsequent history is identified with that regiment. It was mustered out with the 191st in the field, June 28, 1865.
