Regimental History
Fourth New York Provisional Cavalry. — Col., Edwin V. Sumner; Lieut.-Col., James M. Wheelan; Majs., Henry Terwilliger, Edgar A. Hamilton, Minott A. Pruyn. Under the orders of the war department of May 8, 1865, this regiment was formed by the consolidation of the 3d cavalry and the 1st mounted rifles, the consolidation taking place on July 21, 1865. Col. Sumner of the 1st mounted rifles was given the command of the new organization, which was mustered out of service on Nov. 29, 1865, at City Point, Va. It lost 10 men by disease and other causes.
