Died at Spring Hill, Tenn., January 25, 1872.

Commands.
July 18, 1861, brigade composed of the Fifth, Sixth and Twelfth Alabama and the Twelfth Mississippi Regiments, being the Second Brigade, First Corps, Army of the Potomac. Brigade afterward composed of the First, Seventh, Eleventh, and Seventeenth Regiments Virginia Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia.
Division composed of the brigades of Brigadier Generals Elzey, Trimble and Taylor, Army of Northern Virginia.
Commanding Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, May 10, 1863, to January 31, 1864.
Commanding the Department of Richmond, June 27, 1864, to end of the war.

Ewell, Richard Stoddert, born in Virginia, appointed from Virginia cadet United States Military Academy, July 1, 1836; graduated thirteenth in a class of forty-two.
Brevet second lieutenant, First Dragoons, July 1, 1840.
Second lieutenant, November 1, 1840.
First lieutenant, September 18, 1845.
Captain, August 4, 1849.
Brevet captain, August 20, 1847, for gallant and meritorious conduct at the battles of Contreras and Churubusco, Mexico.
Resigned May 7, 1861.
