Sixty-first Indiana Infantry. — Authority was given Bernard F. Mullen to organize this regiment, to be known as the 2nd Irish regiment, during the winter of 1861-62. The recruits were first rendezvoused at Madison, later being transferred to Terre Haute and Indianapolis to guard the Fort Donelson prisoners. The attempt to raise the regiment was a failure and on May 22, 1862, the enlisted men and a few officers were transferred to the 35th Ind., serving with that regiment during its term of service.
