Regimental History
One-Year Regiments. — A call was made, Dec. 20, 1864, for eleven regiments for one year's service, and recruiting stations were established at the headquarters of each of the provost marshals, recruits being forwarded to Indianapolis. Subsequently five additional regiments were called for, and under these calls the following organizations were raised :One Hundred and Forty-seventh Indiana Infantry. — Col., Milton Peden; Lieut.-Col., Theodore F. Colgrove; Maj., Joel J. Finney. The 147th was organized at Indianapolis in March, 1865, and was composed of seven companies recruited in the 5th Congressional district, two from the 11th, and one composed of detachments from Benton, Henry and Fayette counties. It was mustered in March 13 and left the state for Harper's Ferry, Va., where it was attached to one of the provisional divisions of the Army of the Shenandoah. It was engaged on guard and garrison duty at various times at Stephenson's depot, Summit Point, Berryville, Harper's Ferry and Maryland heights until Aug. 4, 1865, when it was mustered out. The original strength was 1,051; gain by recruits, 27; total, 1,078. Loss by death, 44; desertion, 63; unaccounted for, 1.
