Union Battle Summary |
Newport News, Va., July 5, 1861. While a party of
Federal cavalry was engaged in foraging in the vicinity of Newport
News an attempt was made by Lieut.-Col. Charles D. Dreux, with a
detachment of Confederate soldiers, to draw the Union troops into an
ambush. Although the foragers were dispersed it was with considerable
loss to the enemy, 2 men being killed, one of whom was Dreux, and
their team ran away with the howitzer, which finally fell into the
hands of the Federals.
