Commanding the division in Polk's Corps, Army of Tennessee, composed of the brigades of Deas, Chalmers, Manigault and Patton Anderson. Commanding, April 30, 1864, the reserve forces of Alabama. Commanding, February 6 to July 27, 1864, the District of North Alabama, in Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana.

Withers, Jones Mitchell, born in Wisconsin, appointed from Alabama cadet United States Military Academy, July 1, 1831; graduated forty-fourth in a class of fifty-six.
Brevet second lieutenant, First Dragoons, July 1, 1835.
Resigned December 5, 1835.
Lieutenant colonel, infantry, March 3, 1847; Thirteenth Infantry, April 9, 1847.
Colonel, Ninth Infantry, September 13, 1847.
Resigned May 23, 1848.
